I personally met Tom Nevins on a professional basis when I was
with Abbott in the early 1980's. At that time he worked for us
in comparing the Rules of Employment, salary, retirement and other
benefits when we were merging three companies in Japan.
In recent years in working at SmithKline (now SmithKline Beecham),
we have involved Tom on a number of issues including such things
as evaluating, updating and writing new Rules of Employment again
as we merged two companies to form a joint venture company between
Sumitomo and SmithKline.
On specific problem employee issues that are bound to come up
in a company of our size and time in Japan he has been a major
resource in resolving these smoothly. We have avoided confrontations
and have been able to move decisively while maintaining good relations
with people who are outplaced. In particular, Tom has been a constant
source of timely and effective counsel to myself as I charted
the organization through many changes successfully.
