I ran our company in Japan from 1976 to December
1983. We are a British firm with a long and mainly successful
history in Japan manufacturing products for the metal producing
industries with hundreds of local employees. However, automation
and a change in product mix lead us into confrontation with the
union once again and the order from the Head Office was to further
cut back staff and operating costs. Mr. Nevins listened carefully,
asked a few questions and helped us make a few basic decisions
that had an on-going influence, not only on the success of our
staff reduction but also on our manufacturing and business plan
in Japan.
I can highly recommend him as a man to talk to whenever making
decisions effecting the employment conditions or job security
of your employees. He can direct you with new ideas and creative
approaches, and is also willing to roll up his sleeves and do
detailed work. After successful completion of our staff reduction
programme Mr. Nevins also analyzed all of our employment regulations
and personnel practices and his assessment of compensation programs,
Rules of Employment and collective bargaining agreements was most
helpful to us in influencing future policies and programmes.
